KIC Scanner Temporarily Unavailable

The KIC scanner is in need of repair/servicing. The technician isn't expected until Tuesday afternoon, per Bill Donovan. Please inform patrons of the scanning options below:

O'Neill Library - Flatbed scanners are available at the Technology Center on Level Three and at the top of the stairs on Level Four.
Bapst Libary - There are scanners on either side of the information desk.
Educational Resource Center - There are six flatbed scanners (2 Mac and 4 PC) in the computer area.
Social Work Library - There are two scanners behind the reference desk, one in the back of the library, and one in the bank of computers at the front of the library.
Theology and Ministry Library - There are three flatbed scanners in the computer lab on the third level. There is also an overhead scanner in the copying/printing area on the main level.

Hello,
To follow-up on a ref desk question, Bill Donovan said that there are still print copies made of Boston College dissertations for preservation purposes. These are kept at the Burns Library
and may be used only by prior appointment.
Also the signature page is only included in the Burns print copy, not in the electronic copy nor in the Proquest online copy. This is to prevent identity theft.

Downloading Issues IE vs. FF

I've had a few questions at the desk over the past week or two about trouble downloading a file -- usually a student trying to access a word doc they emailed themselves and are having difficulty saving or opening. It doesn't seem to matter if they've emailed themselves the file in gmail or via the college mail. But consistently, they're using IE and when I switch them over to FF it works fine.

It's happened a number of times now, so I thought it might be worth reporting to the folks who maintain the public machines...

I’ve spoken with some of your students over the past few days about the status of the Heights digitization project and I wanted to update you about this.

Right now, I only have access to hard copies of the Heights from 1990’s to early 2000’s as the rest of the hard copies are being digitized as I type. So the microfilm of the Heights, available on the first level of O’Neill, is now the way to access any pre-1990’s issues of the Heights.

As you probably already know , the Sub Turri’s are available online via Internet Archive: http://www.archive.org/details/subturri

New MacLion OS 10.7 Not Campatible with Write-N-Cite 2.5

Subject: Syndetics Book Cover Images Down

A storm-caused power outage at Bowker, parent company of Syndetics, in New Jersey has knocked out the server from which we get book cover images, summaries, and related information in Quest and Holmes. The images and links have been turned off in Quest. In Holmes, many records will still have a "Click here for additional information" link, but it will not bring anything up until the server is restored. Some book cover images in LibGuides also come from Syndetics and will come up as broken images until the problem is fixed. The outage also affects our access to two Bowker databases: Global Books in Print and Ulrich's Periodicals Directory. Bowker hopes to have power restored soon.

The TCS have corrected the problem of duplex printing. Duplex IS the default setting on both PCs and Macs and changing the setting to single-sided won’t affect other users anymore.

ARTstor has recently started to require users to register before downloading images from ARTstor. This information - which includes the email that is used to register and a disciplinary affiliation - will help ARTstor build future collections that best meet users' needs.

To register for an ARTstor account

1. Access the ARTstor Digital Library.
2. In the Log In area at the upper right side of the screen, click Register
3. A registration form will appear. Enter a valid email address, password, your role at your institution, and the academic department you are affiliated with.
4 Click Submit.

You will automatically be logged in to your new account. The Log In area will change to display a welcome message and your email address.

Looking for the Heights?

Someone at O’Neill sent over a researcher looking for a print issue of The Heights to supplement a gap/poor quality image in the microfilm. Unfortunately, the print Heights is completely unavailable.

Here’s what’s happening with The Heights: in preparation for digitization at an outside vendor, all print issues of The Heights at Burns have been inventoried; damaged pages have been treated by conservation; bound volumes are staged for disbinding, are at Acme to be disbound, or have been disbound; and disbound copies are collated and boxed or staged for boxing for shipment to the vendor. Soon print volumes will be in Canada for imaging. I recognize the inconvenience, but the result will be an online, searchable version of the complete run of the student paper! It will be a wonderful resource.

Scavenger Hunt in the Libraries

Heads Up.
There will be a campus scavenger hunt on Friday, Sept 2 from 2-4pm as part of the Class of 2015 Orientation Program. The goals of the Scavenger Hunt are;

1. To help students locate geographically the offices and programs they might be interested in, as well as some interesting campus landmarks; and
2. To get students to learn something distinctive about the programs these offices offer.

It is hard to predict how many students will take part in this, but it could potentially be most of the 1700, so there really is not time for much interpersonal interaction between staff and answer crazed students. Here are the questions for O'Neill and Bapst Libraries,

How many computers are there in the O'Neill Library Reference area? How many are Macs, how many are PCs?

One of the BC Libraries was recently voted the most beautiful college library in the country. How many hours is it open each school day?

In response to Wanda's recent email post about booking Room 307 from the Reference Desk or from home.

If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer 6 or later, you can only use Outlook Web Access Light, which provides fewer features such as booking rooms or adding items on your calendar.

Barbara and I tried accessing the BCL Oneill 307 calendar from the desk and were able to see the scheduled classes in both, but were only able to add a class using Internet Explorer.

Support for incoming faxes

Following up on Barbara's post about receiving faxes, some clarification: Gail and I revised documentation related to the fax service we offer. The service we support essentially is an outgoing fax service. Even though the machine is capable of receiving faxes, we're not publicizing it. This is because the library is not responsible for the receipt and security of incoming faxes. There was a coordinated service supporting incoming faxes in the days of the Document Serivices unit, but this no longer is the case. Margie will be posting the updated information on the library web page.

New Color Printing Policy

Color Printing Policy

• Technology Center student assistants will make the prints.
• The charge for color prints is $1.00 per page. Make sure the patron knows the cost before going on with the process.
• Cash is no longer accepted.

Payment: Charging to student accounts

• The Technology Center student assistant will ask for a BC ID and record the patron’s name, Eagle ID, and number of pages printed on the clip board kept in the cabinet below the Tech desk, and give prints to the patron.
 Circulation will pick up the clip board once a week to charge the student accounts recorded.

Please note: Because cash is no longer accepted, color printing is only available to the BC community.

The UIS application is available on Windows XP computers G1-G5 and also on the Macs. On Windows XP, when the Unzip box appears, click on Browse and choose Desktop. UIS will download to the desktop. On the Macs, click on the Hard Drive icon and then choose Applications. UIS will be one of the choices.

Note: The current process of certification is available only thru October 31st, 2009. Students in the midst of completing certification or who wish to begin this process, will need to finish the certification by the end of October. After October 31st, a new Bloomberg Essentials Program will be available. Reserve login problems

Some students report that their user name and pin don't work to log-in to Course Reserves. The solution is the same as the post below, change the password.

Students also report problems viewing online reserve articles from IE on EIC machines. Reported to Gail.

Students Unable to Log On to Library Computers

If students report that they cannot log on to library computers but can log on to Agora, tell them that they must change their password in Agora. The new password should allow them to log on to everything. It is recommended that they do this.

Typing the first eight digits of their Eagle ID number as a password will also log them on to our computers.

I'm sorry that I neglected to think of this, but Windows XP is also on the computers behind the Ref Desk. (Y1-Y16) . Students can download UIS application on these computers. I'm still waiting for the Eagle Print shop to deliver our Printer signs. They promised them for last Tuesday, but even after a couple of phone calls still haven't delivered them. Students have been unable to log on to some of the XP computers at workstations Y1-Y16. This is because the logon space has become full. I can add space manually, and the TC's grad student will be updating them all this afternoon. The cache is universally emptied every 7 days, but we must have had an inordinate amount of logons last week Thanks, Gail

Mozilla crashing on New EIC Computers

Mozilla is giving runtime errors and closing on the newly installed EIC computers when users attempt to open files which call on Adobe. This pertains only to stations 1-22. The TCs are working on redoing the image. The remainder of the computers (those nearest to the Reference Stacks) are the old computers and are fine. TCs will not move ahead with the remainder of the replacement computers until this issue is resolved.

The computer called ONEIREFDESK1 was infected with a password stealing trojan on 4/21/09 at 6:00 pm. If you used this computer between then and today 4/23/09 at 2:00 pm it is recommended you consider changing any passwords you may have used during that time frame. If you need assistance with the task please call the BC Help Center at 552-HELP or log on to Agora to reset your BC password - in case you logged on to webmail during the time in question. Sorry for the inconvenience.

As of 5:30 pm today the PC was rebuilt and is functioning again with some tighter restrictions.

Printing Problems in EIC

Jobs printing from the GIS workstations appear in the print queue with the username geography. The have to be remotely released. This is only a temporary situation until Pharos is configured properly.

Access to all programs on the business workstations cluster will be unavailable for the next few days. We are replacing the existing set-up. Databases include: Bloomberg, SDC, Datastream as well as GIS and SPSS.
